To grow opportunities for medtech manufacturers to sell to health services, a new initiative, the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Alliance (AMMA), has been formed to create a connected programme, led in Victoria and building on the work of the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre.

Under BioMelbourne Network’s leadership, the Alliance has been established in partnership with peak industry bodies: AusBiotech, MTPConnect, and Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL), Pathology Technology Australia (PTA), the Association of Healthcare Supply and Procurement Officers (AHSPO), the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA); and the Industry Capability Network Victoria, with seed funding from the Victorian Government.

The Alliance seeks to create a unified industry voice, and advocate on behalf of Victorian SME medtech manufacturers across the key issues impacting the sector. This includes addressing procurement issues to increase the proportion of locally-made medtech in the Australian healthcare system – a goal that can be achieved by drawing on the wide variety of high-quality medtech products already on offer from local manufacturers.

“Australia is home to world-class medtech innovators and manufacturers. Increasing awareness of these companies and growing local content in health, will support Australian health services to continue to deliver world-leading care and strengthen our country’s sovereign capabilities.

“The Victorian pilot aims to demonstrate the potential of this ambitious and important solutions-focused Alliance, and work as a stepping stone to empower the national agenda.” – CEO, BioMelbourne Network

The Pathway to Market – Medtech Capability Uplift Program

With a focus on local procurement, MTPConnect’s Pathway to Market – Medtech Capability Uplift Program is designed to get more home-grown medtech products purchased and used by local hospitals and health services.

It is an initiative of the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Alliance (AMMA), delivered by MTPConnect in partnership with BioMelbourne Network and supported by the Victorian Government. AMMA was established as a consortium in partnership with peak industry bodies to drive local procurement and medtech industry growth.

The highly sought after program, rolling out in 2026 for the second time, supports Victorian medtech SMEs who are market-ready companies producing one or more medical device(s) (TRL 6-9) through a focused 4-month journey to position themselves competitively for local health procurement opportunities.

  • The 2026 program provides a capability assessment and tailored practical workshops to becoming procurement-ready to navigate Victorian Government’s procurement pathway, aligning with hospital procurement.
  • An expert-led Medtech Procurement Masterclass (early March 2026), held face-to-face in Melbourne and open to the sector, providing deep insights on local procurement pathways
  • The program concludes with the Victorian Medtech Showcase in May/June 2026, where participating companies will have the opportunity to present their products and connect directly with major health service buyers and clinical leaders.

Victoria serves as the pilot state for this important, solutions-driven program, setting the foundation to drive a national agenda for medtech innovation and manufacturing.
