Australian Red Cross Lifeblood launches Circularity Challenge to tackle medical waste

Posted: 11 November 2025

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has launched its Lifeblood Circularity Challenge, an open innovation initiative seeking creative, scalable solutions to reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastics in healthcare.

The challenge calls for ideas that can minimise plastic waste made from materials such as low- and high-density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Entries are invited across three categories:

  • Cost production
  • New products
  • Open Category

The challenge is open to individuals and teams from start-ups, universities, corporates and student groups. Shortlisted participants will have the opportunity to develop their concepts with Lifeblood’s Innovation Team and may be invited to pilot or trial their solutions within defined Lifeblood environments.
