La Trobe University has unveiled a new biosensor research hub aimed at developing devices that can detect molecules in food, air, or blood, including allergen tests. The facility, named the Australian Research Council Research Hub for Molecular Biosensors at Point-of-Use (Mobius), was established following a $4.7 million grant from the Federal Government’s Australian Research Council.
This initiative marks the beginning of a five-year collaboration with five Australian universities and over 20 industry partners. The new hub will focus on developing point-of-use biosensors for a range of applications. Among the ongoing projects are a pocket-sized sensor to help first responders quickly identify biological threats using a mobile phone, and a portable, low-cost test for detecting mastitis in cattle, aimed at improving herd health and increasing revenue for farmers.
La Trobe University Chancellor and former Victoria Premier, John Brumby, highlighted the importance of industry-academic partnerships like Mobius in driving economic growth, commercial outcomes, and enhancing industry competitiveness.
Prof. Conor Hogan, Mobius Director, emphasized that the facility would accelerate the translation of research into industry outcomes, boosting Australia’s biosensing sector and advanced manufacturing capabilities. “The ability to take measurements wherever needed rather than sending a sample to a laboratory has already had profound impacts for many Australians,” Prof. Hogan said.
