Echidna Surgical solutions Pty Ltd is currently a research and development company, researching the feasibility of the Echidna Pin.
The Echidna Pin is a surgical intramedullary bone fracture fixation device, meaning it is a device that is inserted into the hollow cavity of a long bone, ie the space inside the bone that contains the bone marrow. The Echidna Pin is unique in that after the pin is inserted into the bone, it can be locked into place by the extrusion of spikes from within the pin, which fix into the surrounding bone.
It can also be adapted to lengthen a bone, if for example a bone has stopped growing, due to say an accident which has damaged the growth plate of a growing child, or possibly a cancer/tumour has been cut out of a bone and when the two cut ends of the bone are joined together, the bone is then shorter, which then should be lengthened to the natural length of the bone.
The Echidna Pin, once locked into the bone, can have a magnetic receiver attached to the end of the pin. The skin is then sutured closed with the receiver under the skin. A programmable hand held magnetic driver can then be located over the receiver, then once positioned, it can be activated to lengthen a prescribed length, at particular times, until the bone attains the required length.
