Monash University partners with South Korea’s K-Bio Lab Hub to establish first Australian biotech launchpad

Posted: 29 September 2025

Monash University announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s government-backed biotech incubator, K-Bio Lab Hub, to create the organisation’s first Australian launchpad in Melbourne. The collaboration, centred within the Monash Technology Precinct, is set to begin supporting biotech startups in 2025 with plans to scale to 30 companies by 2027.

The partnership is expected to generate opportunities for joint research, clinical trials and commercialisation, linking Monash researchers with Australia’s broader innovation ecosystem. The Melbourne launchpad will primarily house therapeutics ventures approaching clinical trials and early-stage drug discovery companies, aligning with Monash’s expertise in pharmacology, drug development, clinical research and commercialisation pathways.

Professor Mike Ryan, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), said the agreement highlighted Monash’s global standing in biotechnology. “This MoU with K-Bio Lab Hub reflects Monash’s globally recognised excellence in research, and we’re looking forward to linking our strengths in biotech with Korea’s thriving ecosystem to accelerate discovery and impact,” Professor Ryan said.

Professor Craig Jeffrey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International), emphasised Monash’s commitment to cross-border partnerships. “Monash University is deeply committed to building enduring partnerships across the Asian region that deliver impact for our communities,” he said.

K-Bio Lab Hub, a major national initiative in South Korea, was established to accelerate biotech innovation by nurturing high-potential startups and connecting them with global collaborators. Its flagship research and development complex is under construction in Songdo and will provide an international platform for engagement with partner institutions such as Monash.

The initiative is being advanced with support from Invest Victoria, the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Melbourne and local ecosystem partners, further strengthening ties between Australian and Korean biotech communities.
